July 28, 1956 - May 4, 1997
We lost Charlene after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She left behind her husband Bob Baker, a daughter Shanna (Kyle) Lawrence and a son Allan Baker.
Charlene was a gifted artist and from the time she was in grade 5 she had a love for drawing horses. Although the opportunity to ride did not come until after she was married, horses would become an integral part of her life from then on. As with all things Charlene did, it was done to the best of her ability and with consuming passion.
Charlene was a well liked and respected Equine Canada Western Level 2 Coach and Equine Canada Course Conductor. She was instrumental in introducing and supporting the Equine Canada Coach and Rider programs to Central North East Alberta.
She was a supporter of youth programs and was the backbone of the Elk Point Horse Shows, which offered the A.E.F.’s Heritage Bluesky program to its competitors. Charlene was instrumental in the building of the Agriplex that is in the town of Elk Point. The building and yearly horse show have the
honour of bearing her name, The C. G. Baker Memorial Arena and The C.G. Baker Memorial Horse Show.
In recognition of Charlene’s work and dedication to the Equine Canada Western Rider and Equine Canada Western Coaching programs in Alberta, the Alberta Equestrian Federation provides a $500.00 Scholarship awarded annually to the Western Rider who has achieved the highest average score of the 4 tests in the Western Rider Development Program. In the event of a tie, the highest scoring Rider IV test is used.
