We are pleased to announce this year’s clinicians: Frank Madden – Jumping Frank Madden stands out as one of the most successful and dedicated trainers of young and developing show jumping talent in the US. Madden’s career highlights include coaching several of USEF’s young riders including students who have earned a team gold at the Nations’ Cup competition, and a USEF Junior Equestrian of the Year. In the North American Young Rider Championships, Madden’s students took the team gold and individual silver medals. Madden’s efforts have been recognized in various awards and honors such as the prestigious “Developmental Coach of the Year” awards from the United States Olympic Committee in 2004 & 2006 and “Show Hunter Horseman of the Year for 2005” by The Chronicle of the Horse. Dr. Cesar Parra – Dressage Dr.Cesar Parra has been a popular and successful competitor and trainer on the international dressage scene since 1995. As an international rider and trainer, Dr. Parra has trained with the best in the sport, including Herbert Rehbein, Siegfried “Bimbo” Peilicke, Hans Rueben, Herbert Kuckluck and Hubertus Schmidt. Dr. Parra has had the honor of competing in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens as well as the World Cup in Las Vegas in 2005 and World Equestrian Games in Aachen Germany in 2006. This USDF Gold Medalist and member of the International Dressage Trainer’s Club has more than 300 FEI wins. Jerry Tindell – Donkeys & Mules Jerry Tindell grew up in Missouri in a logging family that used horses and mules for power. “Getting the job done” was the first objective. Experiencing the behavior of horses and mules throughout his growing years has given Jerry Tindell a unique insight into the equine psyche. Jerry Tindell’s ability to transform these early lessons in life with equines has been a major part of his development today. As an experienced packer and a lover of the backcountry, Jerry has been an advocate of the “gentle use of the backcountry” for many years. Through a lifetime of handling horses and mules, Jerry has developed a comprehensive knowledge of equine behavior and the human skills necessary for top performance. While practicing non-resistant behavior training, Jerry’s emphasis targets effective communication and safety. His considerable experience has broadened his ability to instruct horsemen of all skill levels and riding preferences. Jonathan Field – Horsemanship Jonathan’s love of horses began early, and he can’t remember when they weren’t part of his life. His earliest memories are of competing in horse shows, both English and Western. As a young man, he cowboyed for the Quilchena Cattle Company. Shortly after the cowboy experience, he suffered an industrial accident. Horses were instrumental in his recovery and it was then that he decided to make horses his life. Jonathan has been privileged to study under some great horsemen, including Ronnie Willis, Ray Hunt and World Reining Champion, Craig Johnson. His greatest mentor, however, is Pat Parelli. It was Pat who impressed upon Jonathan the fundamental truth about horsemanship: the dignity of the horse must always come first. Jonathan’s most important teachers, however, have been his horses. Through them, he has learned how important it is to see things from a different point of view and to understand that of all characteristics of great horsemen, humility may be the most important. Being a great horseman goes beyond loving horses and being a good rider. A great horseman strives to understand and relate to horses using their own language. Jonathan is just as passionate about teaching people about horses. A natural presenter, he has honed his skills as a clinician. Presented with the 2005 Horse Council of B.C.’s New Innovative Business/Service Award, Jonathan has proven himself a gifted teacher. Students, experienced or beginning, leave his clinics with visions of new possibilities and wanting more. Stacy Westfall – Reining & Horsemanship Stacy Westfall, of Mt. Gilead, Ohio, is no stranger to the competition arena. She was the first woman to compete in and the first woman to win Road to the Horse--showcasing her horse training methods. Stacy is also a winner in the reining show pen. She's best known for her "mystery-rider" bridle-less freestyle ride. In 2003, National Reining Horse Association Futurity fans leapt to their feet after her bridle-less ride rated tops with the judges. She won without reins--and without so much as a neck rope. In 2005, Stacy won six key reining events without reins-including runs at Fiesta in the Park, the NRHA Eastern Affiliate Championship, The Tradition Freestyle Open, the Tulsa Reining Classic, the All American Quarter Horse Congress, and a repeat win at the NRHA Futurity. She repeated her Tulsa championship in 2006-without a saddle or bridle. At college in the University of Findlay's equestrian program, Stacy rode with top trainers such as Dan Huss and AQHA Professional Horseman of the Year, Clark Bradley. She also trained with Rusty Dare and Mike Flarida. Still, Stacy's daily inspiration and life-long training partner is husband Jesse--himself a well-known reining trainer and NRHA judge. Robyn Hood - TTEAM & TTouch Robyn began riding horses before she could walk and has competed successfully in Hunter, Jumper, Three-Day Eventing, Endurance, Western and more recently in Gaited horses. My husband, Phil Pretty, and I are among the earliest breeders and importers of Icelandics. Phil and I first met the Icelandics in 1976, when we helped my sister, Linda Tellington-Jones condition 15 Icelandics and then crewed for the Great American Horse Race. Since 1986 Robyn has been teaching TTEAM and TTouch on a full-time basis in Canada, the US, Europe and Australia. TTEAM offers a training approach that encourages optimal performance and health and presents solutions to common behavioral and physical problems. Doug & Kathy Vouchell – Horsemanship Kathy began her love affair with horses at the age of 10. She has ridden in several different disciplines, including Hunter Jumper competitions, Western Pleasure and basic training of horses. In 2003, Kathy attended the John and Josh Lyons certification program after seeing that John's methods were highly effective, as well as time saving in the training of her own horses. Due to the success and knowledge that Kathy gained while training one on one with John and Josh Lyons in Parachute, Colorado, Doug decided to attend the certification program in 2004. Both agree that it was the best decision that they have ever made. John's training methods have allowed them both to take their horse training to the next level and elevated them to true professionals in the horse industry. Charlie Cole – WP, HUS & Competitive Trail Charlie has been involved with horses for over 20 years and has trained more than 50 AQHA world champions. He is a four-time AQHA Superhorse winner and a four-time AQHA World Show All Around Horse winner with multiple world and congress championships in Western Pleasure, Trail, Barrels, HUS and Showmanship. His years of experience and expertise have led to many impressive accomplishments including the winner of the USET’s 1981 National Four-In-Hand Championships. His competition success continued when he was selected to represent the United States Team in the 1987 World Pairs Championships and then going on to win the USET’s 1990 National Pairs Championships. Lower’s expertise made him a much sought after coach by many top U.S. competitors of combined driving such as Ryan Weatherford, 2005 National Singles Champion, Scott Padgett, member of the U.S. Singles Team for 2004, Fritz Grupe member of the 2005 U.S. Pairs Team and Chester Weber of Live Oak Farm who is the most accomplished 4-In-Hand driver in the U.S. holding numerous World Championship titles in combined driving. Dale Myler – Myler Bits Dale Myler's extensive research into equine dentistry and equine physiology has brought an added understanding to the connection between bitting, and the equine mouth, and the way Myler bits are designed. Dale has done clinics and seminars worldwide: Austria, Canada, England, Germany, Ireland, Scotland, Sweden, Switzerland, Wales and the U.S. The Trainer’s Challenge will feature: Steve Rother – returning Champion from last year’s expo Known as “The Horse Teacher,” Steve is dedicated to all horse people who strive to teach their horses by educating themselves. He has a unique ability to teach and communicate to both horse and human. By blending education with entertainment, and utilizing equine psychology, Steve helps thousands each year unlock the potential of their equine dreams. He believes that building a proper and thorough foundation means the difference between a horse that responds as a willing partner, and one that makes teamwork an impossible goal. Steve is not limited to specific disciplines, but rather the development of a willing partnership. Craig Cameron – Texas A native Texan, Craig Cameron is one of the original clinicians. He travels extensively demonstrating the style of horsemanship he has perfected in the last 23 years. Craig starts thousands of horses each year and he has created a program that builds confidence and trust between man and horse. Craig is a regular in “Trainer’s Challenge” type competitions. A winner of the 2002 Working Cowboy of the Year Award and featured regularly on RFD-TV, including hosting the very popular Extreme Cowboy Race. With gentle patience, skill and more than 30 years experience, Jon trains riders to build a working relationship with their horses which comes from a deep understanding of equine thinking, instincts and behavior. In decades of riding, rodeo, and breaking ranch and cow horses, Jon sensed there was “something better” to be learned about breaking colts and uniting horse and rider as a mutually beneficial team. Studying under Buck Brannaman and other notable horsemen, Jon developed a method of teaching that has helped thousands of riders improve their skills and sportsmanship.
