The Government of Alberta has recently announced a proposal for a new mix of public land and parks known as “Bighorn Country”. Bighorn Country includes public lands within the western part of the North Saskatchewan Region, from the boundary of Banff National Park eastward towards Drayton Valley. It includes Clearwater County, most of Brazeau County, and the current Bighorn Backcountry management area. It is currently managed for environmental, Indigenous, social, and economic values. Significant contributions have been made by local stewardship groups and stakeholders supporting conservation, and managing for a broad range of nature-based recreation and tourism on the landscape.

Bighorn Country is a proposal to strengthen the existing management of the area and ensure an appropriate balance between conservation, recreation, and economic diversification. The goal is to ensure safe and positive outdoor recreation and tourism experiences, protect critical headwaters and sensitive landscapes and support the economic opportunities this area provides Albertans.

Have your voice heard! An online survey and further information on the Bighorn Country proposal is available at talkaep.alberta.ca. The deadline for feedback is January 31st, 2019.
