The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) has been notified of a confirmed case of Equine Herpes Myeloencephalopathy (EHM), caused by equine herpes virus 1 (EHV-1), in Southern Ontario. A blood sample from a horse with severe neurological signs tested positive for EHV-1 in early January. The horse was euthanized after its condition deteriorated. On a second farm in the same area, another horse with similar signs was euthanized in late December. No samples were collected from that horse.

One new case of equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) has been confirmed and one horse has been euthanized in connection with the current outbreak in Orange County, CA, according to a statement from the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA).

The University of Calgary, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, is conducting a research study to follow-up on the outbreak of Equine Herpesvirus 1 (EHV1) that occurred in Western Canada following the National Cutting Horse Association event in Ogden, Utah in April - May 2011. The goal of this research is to identify factors associated with the outbreak in order to prevent and control outbreaks in the future.

From sporadic disease to outbreaks, infectious diseases have a tremendous impact on the equine industry and highlight the need for increased biosecurity awareness and education. The 2011 Fall Classic Sale had terrific weather, full spectator stands and many try-outs. The horses came with great pedigrees and good presentation, particularly the 2-year olds. From this exceptional group of 2-year olds three were sold to Kansas City, Missouri -- Air-OMatic, a very talented jumper son of Air Jordan; MJ Salsa, showing exceptional dressage potential, a daughter of Whirlwind II; and Grandus W a nice jumping son of Gervantus II. The high selling Section A horse, sponsored by Sparks Innovations, was Upstart, a weanling son of Uphill x Royale x Why Not G, bred and owned by Key Warmbloods and purchased by Donald Toney of Lethbridge. The high selling Section B horse, sponsored by Victory Tack Shop, was Cavaluna, a CWHBA mare by Silverstone x Riviera x Ferro, bred and owned by John and Jacqueline van den Bosch and sold to Nathalie Green of Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia.

Effective October 1, 2011, a properly fitted ASTM/SEI (American Society for Testing and Materials/Safety Equipment Institute) or BSI (British Standards Institution) approved equestrian helmet must be worn by: all Horsemanship Level 1, 2 and 3 members while mounted, and all 4-H members born in 2000 and later while mounted.

After three days of intense competition in Show Jumping, Reining and Dressage at the Bromont Olympic Equestrian Park, the Quebec delegation prevailed. Gold medal recipient in the three disciplines, Team Quebec was elected Champion with a total of 215 points. Saskatchewan finished 2nd with 162 points, followed by Nova Scotia with 120 points.

The West Bragg Creek All Season Trail Plan (WBCASTP) was formally approved by Alberta Sustainable Resource Development (SRD) and Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation (TPR) on September 14th, 2010. The WBCASTP was made possible as a result of a March 2009 Partnership Agreement between the Greater Bragg Creek Trails Association (GBCTA) and TPR for the West Bragg Creek Trail System.

We are informed today by Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) that there are horses in northern Alberta that have tested positive to Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA). It is further reported that some of these horses may be sold or for sale throughout the Alberta herd or in British Columbia. Although the sale or comingling of these horses is not confirmed officially and information is difficult to obtain for a number of reasons it may be reasonable to assume that there is EIA exposure to horses. Could it be your horses???

Albertans should take precautions against Lyme disease as ticks carrying the disease have been identified in the province. So far this year, 5 ticks have tested positive for Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacteria that causes Lyme disease. The ticks were found on 4 dogs and a cat. These pets live in the Calgary and Edmonton areas and the ticks were submitted by veterinarians to Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD) for testing. A bite by an infected tick can cause illness in people, wildlife and domestic animals if the tick remains attached for longer than 24 hours.

The Alberta Equestrian Federation (AEF) and the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association (ABVMA) have joined forces on a proactive approach to biosecurity in the horse industry. A manual has been developed to address biosecurity principles and best practices for horse owners and caregivers. The interactive manual, entitled Equine Biosecurity Principles and Best Practices was designed to inform horse owners and caregivers about biosecurity practices and to encourage consultation and discussion with veterinarians on disease control and prevention. The Equine Biosecurity Principles and Best Practices manual will be used and distributed as the basis for equine biosecurity workshops that AEF is organizing and delivering throughout the province of Alberta.

We have done further investigation into the most recent reported case of EHV-1 in Saskatoon since our last conference call update was released. We have contacted and spoken with the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon and have found that there is one case of EHV-1 being investigated.

An update on the EHV-1 situation in Alberta and Western Canada was obtained this morning via a conference call with Veterinarians from Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan. Participants of the conference call included the Chief Provincial Veterinarian, members of Alberta Veterinary Medical Association, faculty from the University of Calgary Veterinary Medicine, Provincial Animal Laboratory veterinarians and local Equine practitioners.
